Norteña music (or simply norteña / norteño) is a genre of regional Mexican music. The accordion and the sixth bass are the most characteristic instruments of the traditional norteño. The genre is popular in both Mexico and the United States, especially among the Mexican and Mexican-American community. It has become popular in other Spanish-speaking countries, including Colombia, Chile and Spain. Although it is native to rural areas, the norteño is popular in both urban and rural areas.
Some of the most popular artists of norteño music include Los Alegres de Terán (group considered the pioneer in raising the genre to international levels, known as the fathers of norteña music), Ramón Ayala (nicknamed the king of the accordion), Carlos and José, Los Tigres del Norte, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Los Relámpagos del Norte, Los Invasores de Nuevo León, Los Cadetes de Linares, Los Huracanes del Norte, Los Hermanos Vega, Los Cardenales de Nuevo León, Los Traileros del Norte, Power of the North, Limit Group, Heavy and Untouchable Group. Local radio stations have continued to be a major influence in popularizing norteño in the Mexican-American community.
